Moxibustion: warmth rather than needles
Moxibustion warms acupuncture points by burning dried mugwort — moxa — near the skin, on the end of a needle, or in a box held above the area. Where needling settles and disperses, moxa warms, which is why it is chosen for patterns that improve with heat.
It is most often used for cold, aching joints, for fatigue, for digestive complaints that worsen with cold food, and in pregnancy care, where moxa at the point BL-67 has a long-established traditional use for breech presentation. That last one should always be done with your maternity team informed.
Moxa produces smoke and a distinctive smell. Smokeless moxa is available if that matters to you — ask when you book.
